Secrets of surreptitious motorcycle cleanliness

Some people say it’s not proper. It’s immoral, even. To take a motorcycle that’s more tractor than street racer, and try and pretty it up — it just doesn’t make sense. It’s supposed to be dirty.

Lots of folks who ride Urals never wash them. They may drive through a puddle once in a while, or leave it out in the rain, but soap never besmirches their Russian rigs. I admit to washing my bike from time to time, especially in the winter when the roads are slick with salt-laden slush. I don’t want my green machine’s life to end prematurely due to rust-ification.

This week I felt the need to hose it off. My own hose has been put away for the winter. I went to a self-serve car wash instead. Please don’t tell a soul.
